LMS selection should start with the learning and compliance operating model, not a feature list. The right platform depends on who learns, how training is assigned, what evidence must be retained and how the LMS connects to HR and operational systems.

Define the learner populations

Separate employees, contractors, external learners, managers and administrators. Confirm whether each group needs self-registration, SSO, manager approval, mobile access or different reporting permissions.

Map compliance and competency

Document mandatory training by role, site, position or work activity. If competency includes licences, external evidence, practical assessments or expiry, make sure the LMS can represent more than course completion.

Evaluate assignment rules

Automated learning pathways should respond to workforce attributes such as role, department, site and employment status. Test transfers and role changes, not only new starters.

Check SCORM and content capability

If the organisation uses SCORM packages, confirm supported standards, bookmarking, completion logic, browser behaviour and reporting. Also assess video, documents, quizzes, instructor-led training and external evidence.

Review validation requirements

Some regulated environments require documented validation, test evidence, controlled change and audit trails. Define those obligations before selecting the platform so the implementation approach can support them.

Plan HRIS integration

HRIS integration can automate learner creation, hierarchy, managers and training assignment. Confirm source-of-truth rules, lifecycle events and what happens to completion history when a person transfers or leaves.

Test reporting early

Common outputs include current compliance, overdue training, due-soon items, competency by role, manager reporting, site compliance and historical completion. Confirm whether native reporting is sufficient or whether Power BI will be required.

Understand administration effort

Ask administrators to create a course, assignment rule, role pathway, report and reminder during evaluation. A platform that looks simple for learners may still create heavy back-office work.

Assess implementation and support

Separate the software decision from the delivery model. Requirements, migration, content, integrations, UAT, reporting and post-go-live administration all need clear ownership.

CloudHub provides LMS consulting, implementation support, competency design, SCORM/eLearning development and managed learning administration.

Selection principle: test the LMS against real learner journeys, real compliance rules and real administrator tasks—not only the vendor demo.
